Clinician Interview: New Matrix System Helps Dentists Perform More "Natural" Anterior Restorations

Garrison Dental Solutions’ Fusion Anterior Matrix System is transforming the way dentists restore deep anterior cavitations. Dr. Apolinar Madrigal adopted the new system earlier this year and has since experienced an improvement on the outcome of his restorations.

Dr. Madrigal said the Fusion Anterior Matrix System allows him greater flexibility and control during the procedure, and its anatomical design results in a more natural finish.

“The uniqueness of this system is that it's built for anterior teeth,” he said. “Unlike a regular matrix band that works great for posteriors, but not so great for anterior teeth.”

“It gives me a tight interproximal contact point at the right height, and also gives me the right contour — so that I can have an aesthetic restoration that mimics natural dentition.”

Dr. Madrigal specializes in cosmetic and implant dentistry, operating from two locations — one practice in California and a second in Mexico.

Over the past few years, he found the current process for anterior restorations to be outdated and inefficient. Without a matrix in place, it’s extremely difficult to mold the composite correctly and even the use of a regular plastic strip can make the contours too flat.

That’s why Dr. Madrigal chooses to use the anatomically designed Fusion Anterior Matrix System.

In his interview with Garrison Dental Solutions, he explains why making the switch not only helped him achieve better results, but has sped up the entire process, reduced the number of errors, and made restorations more comfortable for his patients.

The Problem with Traditional Matrices

It’s an issue most cosmetic dentists deal with — matrices that don’t maintain their shape. It becomes even more frustrating when dealing with the unique anatomy of anterior teeth. The longer, thinner shape often causes bigger gaps.

As a result, many dentists try rotating a posterior matrix to stand vertically to mirror the natural shape of the tooth.

Dr. Madrigal said the unnatural curvature was the biggest problem but there was still the issue of creating a firm contact point.

“Not having a tight contact point means you always have open spaces,” he said. “We’ve used a few different methods. One method, which is using a clear mylar strip. The second way would be to build a wall — either in the palatal or in the facial first — and then go in with a matrix band, but we would use it vertically.”

“The only problem with that is that since the curvature isn't based on the actual anatomical shape of anterior teeth, what would happen is we would get very light convex contact points. So, you would have to adapt that matrix first.”

Dr. Madrigal said he’d used the Fusion Anterior Matrix System for several months and won’t be switching to another product any time soon

The Fusion Anterior Matrix consists of a super thin stainless-steel material, which allows for better interproximal contact. It also holds its structure during application and while injecting composite into the cavity. It can even be used with one hand.

What also sets this apart from other bands and matrices is its shape. The radical curvature ensures a firm seal and minimizes potential gaps between the anterior teeth.

Why the Fusion Anterior Matrix System is a Must-have

Dr. Madrigal said each tooth has its own anatomy, which means it needs its own solution. Especially when you’re accounting for a cavity or fracture. They’re not always in the same place or have the same depth.

Adding the Fusion Anterior Matrix System to your armamentarium means you always have the right solution for the right tooth.

“What I love the most about dentistry is being able to show a patient the before and after,” Dr. Madrigal said. “Showing them how we do our best to try to restore the tooth back to — or at least close to — its original form.”

“That's the main thing for me — giving you the right type of restoration. On top of that, it's obviously much faster. You’re not going to have to deal with the matrix falling out or not adapting correctly because this one just fits perfectly.”

The Fusion Anterior Matrix is just 0.0015 inches thick — up to 50% slimmer than a mylar alternative — allowing it to slide into the sulcus for deeper restorations. When paired with the Fusion Anterior Wedges, it hugs the tooth at its root with minimal discomfort to the patient.

Dr. Madrigal said he’ll continue to use Garrison products because he believes they understand the dental business better and have a firm grasp of what clinicians want from their equipment.

“I've used products from pretty much every company that's out there. The reason why I chose Garrison is because their products work the best. It always fits. I mean, once you use it, you can't go back to any other system.”

The Clear Choice for a Better Anterior Composite Restoration

Sometimes the perfect anterior restoration comes down to technique. But most often, it is dependent on the tools available.

Dentists need equipment that helps them restore anterior lesions quickly, confidently, and with minimal discomfort for their patients.

The Fusion Anterior Matrix System is the clear choice for a better anterior composite restoration. With an easy application, thinner material, and more accurate anatomical shape, it delivers better results in less time.
